EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the power and grace of an Indiana Air National Guard Republic F-84F Thunderstreak taking to the skies. The F-84F-40-RE Thunderstreak, specifically 52-7073 of the 163rd Fighter Squadron, is seen here in its prime during the early 1960s. At this time, the Indiana Air National Guard was part of the 506th Strategic Fighter Wing of the United States Air Force, with the 12th Tactical Fighter Wing and the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing also contributing to its operations. The Thunderstreak, a versatile and agile fighter aircraft, was produced by Republic Aviation Company and first entered service in the late 1940s. By the 1960s, it had been largely replaced by more advanced aircraft, leading to many being retired and salvaged. This particular Thunderstreak was salvaged from the Aircraft Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC) bone yard in 1972. The image exudes the excitement and energy of aviation during this era, with the Thunderstreak's distinctive engine exhaust trailing behind it as it ascends into the clear blue sky. The photograph is a testament to the enduring allure of flight and the courage and skill of the pilots who flew these magnificent machines.
