EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Sorenson Special N24C Deer Fly, a Formula One racer that graced the tracks in the late 1940s. Designed and built by the visionary Keith Sorenson in Van Nuys, California, the Deer Fly was one of two Sorenson Specials created in 1948. The other was the Little Mike N35C. The sleek and aerodynamic Deer Fly was powered by a potent 85hp Continental C85 engine, boasting a wingspan of 18 feet 6 inches and a length of 15 feet 6 inches. The Deer Fly quickly made a name for itself on the racing circuit, achieving numerous victories under various dedicated owners. The Deer Fly's striking appearance and impressive performance were a testament to Sorenson's innovative engineering and design skills. Its distinctive features, such as the pointed wings and streamlined body, set it apart from other racers of the time. Sadly, the Deer Fly's racing career came to an end in 1966 when it met with a tragic accident at the Tampa Air Fair in Florida, claiming the life of its pilot, Bill Stead. Despite this heartbreaking incident, the Sorenson Special N24C Deer Fly remains an iconic figure in the history of Formula One racing, representing a time when passion, innovation, and determination came together to create unforgettable moments on the track.
