EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, Princess Cecilie of Greece, née Princess Cecile Helen Sylvia of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, is captured in a tender moment with her young daughter, Johanna, in the year leading up to the tragic events of 1937. The Princess, born on August 11, 1911, was the eldest sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and a beloved member of the Greek and German royal families. The image showcases the Princess's radiant beauty and maternal love as she gazes down at her cherubic daughter, Johanna, who was born on March 2, 1935. Princess Cecilie's elegant style is evident in her fashionable yet simple ensemble, which includes a chic blouse and a classic skirt, while her daughter is swathed in a cozy white dress and a matching bonnet. At the time of this photograph, Princess Cecilie was residing in Germany with her husband, Hereditary Grand Duke Bernhard of Hesse, and their two young sons, Willem and Philipp. Tragically, the family was en route to attend the wedding of Cecilie's brother-in-law, Lord Louis Mountbatten, when their plane crashed on February 18, 1937, claiming the lives of the Princess, her husband, and their two sons. This poignant portrait serves as a poignant reminder of the short yet meaningful life of Princess Cecilie and her deep bond with her daughter, Johanna. The image also highlights the close ties between the Greek and German royal families and the tragic circumstances that brought them together and ultimately, apart.
