EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a revered figure in Christian history and patron saint of scholars, is depicted in this exquisite 15th-century sculpture by the Master of the Statues of Koudewater. Dated around 1470, this walnut wood sculpture is currently housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Holland. The Master of the Statues of Koudewater, also known as the Master of the Sta or the Master of Marienwater, was an active Netherlandish sculptor during the late Middle Ages, around 1460-1480. The statue showcases Saint Catherine, dressed in rich, flowing robes, her face bearing an expression of deep contemplation and serene beauty. Her long, curly hair cascades down her shoulders, and she holds a palm leaf and a wheel, symbols of her martyrdom. The intricate polychromy adds depth and dimension to the sculpture, enhancing the lifelike quality of the figure. The interior setting of the statue, with its ornate decorative elements and detailed architectural features, suggests a monastery or a chapel. This would have been common for religious sculptures of the time, as they were often displayed in such settings for devotional purposes. Saint Catherine of Alexandria was a legendary figure in early Christianity, known for her intellect and her conversion of Emperor Maxentius to Christianity. She was famously martyred on the wheel, but according to legend, the wheel shattered upon touching her, and she was beheaded instead. Her story has captivated the imagination of Christians for centuries, and this stunning sculpture serves as a testament to her enduring legacy.
