EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black and white portrait captures the young and determined face of Second-Lieutenant George McCubbin, a British aviator who made history during the First World War at the tender age of 18 and a half. McCubbin, a member of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), which would later become the Royal Air Force (RAF), achieved a remarkable feat on 18 June 1916, when he brought down the aeroplane of the German air ace, Max Immelmann. Immelmann, a formidable opponent with an impressive score of 17 aerial victories, was a significant threat to the Allied forces. McCubbin, flying a BE2c two-seater reconnaissance aircraft, engaged Immelmann's Albatros D.II fighter in a dogfight over the Western Front. In the intense aerial combat, McCubbin managed to shoot down Immelmann's plane, marking a significant victory for the Allies. This portrait, taken in 1916, captures the youthful intensity and focus in McCubbin's eyes, reflecting the bravery and skill that led him to this historic moment. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the young lives lost during the First World War, as well as the pivotal role that aviation played in the conflict. McCubbin's story is a testament to the courage and determination of the pilots who took to the skies during this time, risking their lives to protect their countries and change the course of history.
