EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, showcases the skeletons of two remarkable prehistoric marine reptiles: Ichthyosaurus communis (Fish Lizard) and Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus (Long-necked Plesiosaur). The illustration was created by the skilled artist Jean Gabriel Pretre, with engraving by Massard and direction by Turpin. Pretre was an accomplished painter of natural history, having worked at Empress Josephine's zoo before becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. Ichthyosaurus communis, the more famous of the two, is depicted with its streamlined body and fish-like features, including a dorsal fin and paddle-like limbs. This extinct ichthyosaur, a resident of the Jurassic Era, is estimated to have grown up to 6 meters long. The second skeleton, Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus, is characterized by its long neck and four flipper-like limbs. This plesiosaur, also a denizen of the Jurassic Era, is estimated to have measured around 12 meters in length. This exquisite piece of historical scientific art offers a glimpse into the rich fossil record of the Mesozoic Era, a time when fish-like reptiles and long-necked plesiosaurs roamed the Earth's oceans. The intricate details of the engraving, combined with the vibrant hand-coloring, make this a stunning addition to any collection of natural history or paleontology.
