Stamp Card produced by Ottmar Zeihar - German East Africa
Stamp Card produced by Ottmar Zeihar - German East Africa (a German colony in the African Great Lakes region, which included what are now Burundi, Rwanda, and the mainland part of present Tanzania). These cards enabled collectors to see stamps which they were unable to obtain, or afford. There is a complete set of 180 cards, some of the smaller countries had a very low printing run and are hence very rare. Used Zeiher cards are very hard to find as the embossed stamp design was not approved by postal authorities as it confused the function of the proper stamps! Date: circa 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing Stamp Card print, published by Ottmar Zeihar in the early 1900s, showcases a montage of stamps from German East Africa, a colonial region in the African Great Lakes that encompassed present-day Burundi, Rwanda, and the mainland part of Tanzania. The Stamp Cards were a popular philatelic innovation during this era, designed to enable collectors to admire and catalog stamps they may have been unable to obtain or afford due to low printing runs or high costs. The card features an impressive selection of 180 embossed stamp designs, some of which represent smaller countries within the region, making them particularly rare and valuable today. The unique design of these Zeihar cards, with their embossed stamp images, was not approved by postal authorities due to the potential confusion with actual postage stamps. As a result, original Zeihar cards are exceptionally hard to find, adding to their allure for collectors. The Stamp Card's captivating design includes various crests, coats of arms, and emblems from the different countries and regions of German East Africa. The 1904 publication date places this piece in the early history of philately, making it an unusual and fascinating addition to any collection. The Stamp Card is a testament to the rich cultural and historical significance of the stamps of the German colonies in Africa during the 1900s.
