EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing Suffragette Novelty Toy, titled "The Jumping Suffragette or, How the Suffragette Lost Her Head," dates back to circa 1909. The toy consists of a plastic doll, dressed in the colors of the suffrage movement with a Votes for Women sash and carrying an umbrella. The set, referred to as "The Jumpies," was available in both English and French instructions. The figure, which appears to be a playful representation of a suffragette, comes with a detachable head. To operate the toy, one would remove the head from the figure and place the figure on a table. Firmly pressing the head into the neck causes a hidden pin within the figure to penetrate the table. Once raised, the figure's head would spring off, adding an element of surprise and amusement. This novelty toy, though whimsical in nature, serves as a reminder of the global suffrage movement that fought for women's right to vote. The Suffragettes, who advocated for women's suffrage through peaceful protests and civil disobedience, made significant strides in securing the right to vote for women. This toy, with its detachable head, may have been a lighthearted way for people to engage with the suffrage movement and show their support. The Jumping Suffragette is a unique piece of history that highlights the playful and creative ways in which people expressed their political beliefs during this time. This toy, along with others from the "Jumpies" set, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the various ways people connected with the suffrage movement.
