EDITORS COMMENTS
This colossal marble head, depicting the Roman Emperor Vespasian (9-79 AD), is a testament to the grandeur and power of the ancient Roman Empire. Discovered in Naples, Italy, this magnificent sculpture is currently on display at the National Archaeological Museum as part of the temporary exhibition commemorating the two-thousandth anniversary of the Flavian Dynasty. Vespasian, born Titus Flavius Vespasianus, rose to power during a time of political instability and civil unrest in Rome. He was a skilled military leader who successfully put down several rebellions and restored order to the empire. In 69 AD, Vespasian was proclaimed Emperor by the Roman legions in Egypt, marking the beginning of the Flavian Dynasty. During his reign, Vespasian undertook numerous public works projects, including the restoration of the Colosseum and the construction of several temples and public buildings. He also initiated the practice of adding the title "Divus" to the names of deceased emperors, ensuring the continued worship of his predecessors. This colossal head, with its intricately carved features and lifelike expression, offers a glimpse into the face of a man who shaped the course of Roman history. The marble, expertly carved, captures the subtle details of Vespasian's aging features, revealing a man of wisdom and experience. The head is a reminder of the rich history and artistic achievements of the ancient Roman world, and a testament to the enduring legacy of the Flavian Dynasty.
