EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1900, capturing a picturesque view of Towan Head in Newquay, Cornwall. The rugged cliffs on the north side of Towan Head stretch out before us as we gaze towards the east. In this timeless scene, our eyes are drawn to the coastguard lookout standing proudly on the right, its flags fluttering in the wind. It is fascinating to learn that this very spot now serves as Newquay War Memorial, reminding us of its historical significance. As we explore further into the image, our attention is caught by two prominent structures - The Atlantic Hotel and Huers Hut. The grandeur of The Atlantic Hotel, which was established in 1892, stands tall right at the center of this snapshot from yesteryears. Meanwhile, Huers Hut can be spotted in the distance; a relic dating back to mid-1800s. The photograph by John Charles Burrow offers a glimpse into an era when fishing and pilchard industry thrived along these shores. Although not visible within this frame, one can imagine bustling harbors filled with fishermen hauling their bountiful catch ashore while seining for pilchards became a way of life for many locals. As we take in every detail captured by Burrow's lens - from sandy beaches to rocky cliffs - it becomes evident why Newquay has long been cherished as a beloved Cornish town and resort destination.
