Steam train outside Newquay station, Cornwall. Around 1925

Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in some cases, painted by his own hand to great effect. In this case the image is early colour film

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a steam train outside Newquay station in Cornwall, dating back to around 1925. The talented Major Arthur William Gill, a Cornishman and amateur photographer, was widely recognized during the 1920s and 1930s for his remarkable presentations of stills and cine film. His works were showcased to various esteemed groups such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. Major Gill's passion for photography shines through this particular image taken with his ordinary camera. What makes it even more extraordinary is that he skillfully painted some of these quarter plate slides by hand, resulting in stunning visual effects. This specific photograph showcases an early example of color film. The scene depicts a bustling railway environment with the majestic steam engine taking center stage. The picturesque Newquay station serves as the backdrop for this nostalgic moment frozen in time. Majestic hills surround the area while a charming signal box stands prominently nearby. It is worth noting that this print does not represent any commercial use but rather highlights Major Gill's exceptional talent and dedication to capturing moments from Cornwall's rich railway history.
