Caterpillar head, SEM

Caterpillar head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a caterpillar. Caterpillars (order Lepidoptera) are the larval stage of the life cycle of a butterfly or moth. A caterpillar is an eruciform larva, one that has a well-developed head and mouth. Most caterpillars have six very simples eyes (pink) on each side of their head. These light sensitive stuctures are called ocelli or stemmata. It is thought they only sense light and dark, and cannot distinguish shapes or colour. Below the head are three pairs of true legs (not seen), behind which are pseudo- legs along the rest of the body, which provide a firm grip. Magnification: x15 when 10 cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a caterpillar's head, captured through a colored scanning electron microscope (SEM). Caterpillars, the larval stage of butterflies or moths, possess a well-developed head and mouth. The image reveals six simple eyes on each side of the caterpillar's head, known as ocelli or stemmata. While these light-sensitive structures can only perceive light and dark and not shapes or colors, they play an essential role in the caterpillar's survival. Beneath its head lie three pairs of true legs that are not visible in this image. These legs provide stability for the creature while it moves along surfaces. Additionally, pseudo-legs extend along the rest of its body to ensure a firm grip during locomotion. The photograph is magnified 15 times its actual size when printed at 10 cm wide. Its vibrant colors bring attention to every minute detail present in this remarkable specimen from nature's vast array of wildlife. This stunning visual representation offers insights into zoology and entomology while highlighting various aspects such as insect morphology and developmental stages within Lepidoptera order. It serves as a testament to Science Photo Library's commitment to capturing awe-inspiring moments from our natural world without commercial intent.
