EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing historical artwork of the constellation of Virgo. In this colored depiction, Virgo takes the form of an angel gracefully holding a sheaf of wheat. As the sixth sign of the Zodiac, Virgo is associated with those born between 23 August and 22 September when the Sun passes through this celestial region. The significance of this artwork lies not only in its artistic beauty but also in its astronomical importance. Virgo is a prominent constellation that encompasses the point where the ecliptic, represented by a striking black and red line, intersects with the celestial equator. This intersection marks a crucial juncture in our understanding of celestial movements. At the heart of this masterpiece shines Spica, symbolizing the sheaf of wheat held by Virgo's angelic figure. Spica stands as one of the brightest stars in our night sky, adding to both its visual allure and scientific relevance. Created based on Johannes Hevelius' sky map from 1690, crafted after his passing by Polish-German astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), this artwork pays homage to centuries-old cosmological knowledge and exploration. With elements encompassing science, astronomy, artistry, and mythology all intertwined within this image capture from Science Photo Library; it serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with both earthly wonders and cosmic mysteries.
