Kepler Mission rocket launch
Kepler Mission rocket launch. Delta II 7925 rocket taking off to launch NASAs Kepler Mission. This mission is designed to discover Earth-like planets orbiting other stars. A 0.95 metre diameter telescope called a photometer will scan 100, 000 stars in the Milky Way for evidence of Earth-sized terrestrial planets that transit the stars path. The mission was launched on March 7th, 2009, and will orbit the Sun for at least 3.5 years. The mission is named in honour of German astronomer Johannes Kepler. Photographed on 6 March 2009, at Launch Pad 17-B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment of the Kepler Mission rocket launch. The Delta II 7925 rocket is seen propelling into the night sky, carrying NASA's groundbreaking mission to discover Earth-like planets orbiting distant stars. At its core, a 0.95 meter diameter telescope called a photometer will meticulously scan 100,000 stars in our Milky Way galaxy for evidence of terrestrial planets similar in size to our own. Launched on March 7th, 2009, from Launch Pad 17-B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, USA, this technological marvel embarks on an ambitious journey that will span at least 3.5 years orbiting the Sun. Named after German astronomer Johannes Kepler as a tribute to his contributions to astronomy and planetary science, this mission represents humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our home planet. The image showcases the fiery flames and billowing smoke emanating from the rocket as it ascends towards space with determination and purpose. It symbolizes mankind's insatiable curiosity about life beyond Earth and our relentless search for habitable zones within exoplanets. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph captured under the starry night sky of North America, we are reminded of how far we have come in astrophysics and astronomical research in the twenty-first century. This snapshot serves as a testament to human ingenuity and scientific progress while igniting dreams of what lies ahead in our exploration of outer space.
