Tibetan cosmology, 18th century artwork

Tibetan cosmology. 18th century artwork of a Sumeru-like Buddhist world mountain. It is centred on a mandala-like complex (circular area) with huge trees either side. The mountain itself (shaped like an hourglass) is divided into levels (dvipas). 13 terrestrial levels rise to a peak in the clouds (centre). These 13 levels consist of 7 alternating levels of seas and mountains (concentric squares, seen from above), and 6 heavenly levels (with Buddha-like figures) seen in profile with the Sun and Moon either side. A further 18 levels (also in profile) ascend as an inverted mountain to a higher heaven (top). This artwork was published in Alphabetum Tibetanum (1762) by the Augustine friar Antonio Georgi of Rimini (1711-1797)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th-century artwork captures the intricate beauty of Tibetan cosmology. The focal point is a Sumeru-like Buddhist world mountain, shaped like an hourglass and divided into multiple levels known as dvipas. As we ascend through the thirteen terrestrial levels, alternating seas and mountains unfold in concentric squares, while heavenly realms reveal Buddha-like figures accompanied by the radiant Sun and Moon. The celestial journey continues with another eighteen levels ascending as an inverted mountain towards higher heavens. This illustration, published in Alphabetum Tibetanum (1762) by Antonio Georgi of Rimini, showcases his deep understanding of Eastern religion and mythology. The mandala-like complex at the center adds to the symbolic significance of this artwork. Towering trees on either side create a sense of grandeur and tranquility within this mystical realm. Each element meticulously crafted with monochrome precision transports us back to a time when art was not only visually appealing but also served as a gateway to spiritual enlightenment. As we delve into this masterpiece, we are reminded of the rich history and religious traditions that have shaped Tibet's culture for centuries. It serves as a testament to human creativity and our eternal quest for understanding the cosmos beyond what meets the eye. This print from Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate every intricate detail of this extraordinary piece while immersing ourselves in its profound symbolism.
