EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable view of Sheffield, captured between the years 1720 and 1740. The detailed illustration, titled "To the Worshipful the Master, Wardens, Searchers and Assistants of the Corporation of the Cutlers in Hallamshire in the County of York" is an exquisite dedication by Gentlemen to this esteemed organization. Drawn by Hatfield and engraved by H. White, it highlights various significant landmarks within Sheffield. The focal point of this historic depiction is St Paul's Church, known as The New Church at that time. Situated on what is now the Peace Gardens site, it stood tall without its later addition—a magnificent dome on its tower—which helps us date this artwork precisely. This stunning visual also captures other notable features such as maps, town hall, workhouses including Sheffield Workhouse, Ladys Bridge, Castle Hill overlooking River Don and River Sheaf intertwining through the cityscape. Additionally showcased are essential elements like waterworks infrastructure alongside Manor Park and furnaces symbolizing Sheffield's thriving steel industry during that era. Holy Trinity Church stands proudly amidst Wicker district while Sheffield Cathedral and Shrewsbury Hospital add to the architectural grandeur portrayed here. Furthermore, Society of Friends Quaker meeting house can be spotted along with S St Paul's Church. Preserved meticulously at Sheffield Local Studies Library under reference y09999 from Sheffield City Archives collection; this extraordinary print offers a glimpse into Sheffield's rich history for all to appreciate—excluding any
