EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print of "Ennui, 1917-18" by Walter Richard Sickert captures a moment of profound boredom and melancholy. Painted during his time at 15 Fitzroy Street in Bloomsbury, London, this masterpiece was inspired by a dilapidated room in a house on the corner of Granby Street and Mornington Square in Camden Town. In this painting, we see an interior scene featuring a couple lost in their own world of ennui. The female figure sits languidly on a chair, her face reflecting the weariness that permeates the room. She holds a cigar between her fingers but seems disinterested in smoking it. Her male companion stands nearby, equally bored and detached from his surroundings. Sickert's use of impressionistic brushstrokes adds to the overall sense of dullness and monotony within the composition. The muted colors and soft lighting contribute to the somber atmosphere that envelops these figures. Interestingly, it was this particular version of "Ennui" that served as inspiration for Virginia Woolf's account of the painting published in her pamphlet on Sickert in 1934. This further solidifies its significance within art history. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking image captured by Bridgeman Images, we are reminded of the universal experience of ennui - a feeling that transcends time and place.
