Town and harbour of Havannah, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Town and harbour of Havannah, 1844. Ships at the port of Havana: Havannah, the capital of the island of Cuba, and the whole of its northern and southern shores, have just been the scene of a dire calamity, by which the prospects of the sugar crop are rendered infinitely worse than before...the most terrific hurricane that was ever experienced in the island...accompanied by a violent deluge of rain, mixed with spray from the sea. Houses were thrown down, and trees rooted up; several small towns and villages...are said to present little more than heaps of ruins. The accounts from the estates announce the most serious injury; whole fields of cane appear as if fire had passed over them...It is difficult as yet to form an estimate of the vast amount of property destroyed, or of the probable influence of the calamity on the quantity of sugar next season... From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the town and harbor of Havannah in 1844, a moment frozen in time by an unknown creator. The image transports us to Havana, the bustling capital of Cuba, during a period of great devastation caused by an unprecedented hurricane. As we gaze upon this engraving from "Illustrated London News" we witness the aftermath of nature's fury. The scene is one of utter destruction; houses lie in ruins, trees uprooted, and small towns reduced to mere heaps of debris. The sugar cane fields, vital for Cuba's thriving sugar industry, appear as if scorched by fire. This calamity has cast a dark shadow over the prospects for next season's crop. It is difficult to comprehend the magnitude of property lost or predict how this catastrophe will impact future sugar production. Yet amidst this desolation, there is a sense of resilience in the air - ships still dotting the port remind us that trade continues despite adversity. As we study this historical snapshot through time's lens, it serves as a poignant reminder not only of Mother Nature's power but also humanity's ability to endure and rebuild even when faced with immense challenges.
