New church JLP01_10_51847
St Marys Church, New Road, Peterborough. St Marys Church viewed from the south-west at dusk, with lights illuminating the tower and glazed porch.
Construction of St Marys Church began in 1989 and was completed in 1991. The church was built on the site of the former Church of St Mary the Virgin, a mid-19th century parish church which had fallen into disrepair. The land on which the original church stood was sold and a new development known as Churchgate was built: community facilities, offices and a modern church. Original features, including the clock, stained glass, and stones in the arch around the new oak entrance doors, were retained from the former church.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting beauty of St Mary's Church in Peterborough. Bathed in the soft glow of dusk, the church stands tall and majestic, its tower and glazed porch illuminated by a cascade of lights. Constructed between 1989 and 1991, this modern architectural marvel replaced the dilapidated mid-19th century Church of St Mary the Virgin. The former church had fallen into disrepair, prompting its demolition and subsequent sale of land for redevelopment. Known as Churchgate, this new development not only included St Mary's Church but also community facilities and offices. Despite its contemporary design, St Mary's Church pays homage to its predecessor by incorporating original features such as a clock, stained glass windows, and stones from the arch surrounding the new oak entrance doors. This seamless blend of old and new creates a harmonious atmosphere that resonates with both tradition and progress. Catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20, this image serves as a testament to England's rich religious heritage. It encapsulates not just an architectural masterpiece but also symbolizes Christianity's enduring presence within society. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing night scene captured through Historic England Archive lens, we are reminded that churches like St Mary's continue to be sacred spaces where faith meets modernity—a beacon guiding us towards spiritual enlightenment amidst ever-changing times.
