EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the elegance and grace of Lady Maria Francisca Louisa Dommer van Poldersveldt, a prominent figure in 19th-century society. Seated at a grand piano on a plush chair, Lady Maria exudes an air of sophistication as she delicately touches the keys with her right hand. Her left arm rests gracefully on the back of the chair, adding to her composed demeanor. Lady Maria's hair is impeccably styled with small curls adorning her forehead, accentuating her refined features. She wears a high-necked dark-lace dress that exudes timeless beauty, its neckline and arms revealing glimpses of unlined skin. The focal point of her ensemble is the intricately embroidered center panel running from waist to hem, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. The composition of this artwork is masterfully executed by Fernand Khnopff in 1888. The diagonal alignment formed by both the piano keys and embroidery creates visual harmony within the painting. As we gaze upon this piece, we are drawn into Lady Maria's world as she turns away from playing and gazes out towards an unseen horizon. It is worth noting that Mrs. van Rijckevorsel was not only Khnopff's subject but also his aunt - establishing a personal connection between artist and muse. This intimate relationship adds depth to our understanding of this portrait and invites us to contemplate their shared history. Displayed prominently in Academie de Belgique, this remarkable oil painting stands as a testament to Khnopff's artistic prowess while immortalizing Lady Maria's timeless beauty for generations to come.
