EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in the history of Barnardo's Children's Homes, as a group of young emigrants prepare to embark on new lives overseas. The image, which is the property of Mary Evans Prints Online, shows some of the children who were destined to travel to Canada as part of a larger-scale emigration scheme initiated by Thomas Barnardo in the 1880s. Barnardo, a renowned philanthropist, had begun sending children from his homes to Canada in 1872, and this practice continued until the 1920s when Australia was also included as a destination. The children in the photograph, dressed in their best clothes and carrying their belongings, are filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension as they bid farewell to their loved ones and embarked on the long journey to their new homes. The scheme, which aimed to provide children with better opportunities and a chance at a new life, was a significant undertaking that saw thousands of children leave their native land and start anew in foreign lands. Barnardo himself visited Canada in 1891 to oversee the operation of the emigration scheme and ensure that the children were being well taken care of. The success of the initiative paved the way for similar programs in other countries, and the legacy of Barnardo's Children's Homes continues to inspire and help children in need to this day. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these children and the hope that their new lives held for them.
