EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning tapestry, titled "Apocalypse of Angers" and created between 1375 and 1382, is a masterpiece of International Gothic art from the 14th century. Commissioned by Louis I, Duke of Anjou, this tapestry is part of a series of seven scenes, with this particular piece being the third scene of tapestry number 4. The design for the tapestry is attributed to Jean de Bruges, a renowned artist of the late 14th century. The scene depicts the apocalyptic event of the Beast rising out of the earth and making fire come down from heaven. The Beast, a fearsome creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, is shown emerging from a churning vortex of earth and water. Above the Beast, the hand of God reaches down from the heavens, holding a burning torch, ready to unleash the fiery wrath of the divine. The scene is filled with vibrant colors and intricate details, reflecting the Western artistic traditions of the Middle Ages. The tapestry was created during a time of great political and artistic change in Europe, and the Apocalypse of Angers series reflects the complex symbolism and rich imagery of the medieval period. The tapestry is now housed in Angers Castle in Maine-et-Loire, France, and remains an important piece of Western art history.
