EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of connection between Captain Commandant Bogaerts of the Belgian Army and the Powell-Cotton sisters, Diana and Mary, in the garden of Quex, Birchington-on-Sea, Kent, during the summer of 1915. The two young girls, dressed in their Sunday best, are seated on the grass, their curious gazes fixed on their esteemed guest. Major Powell-Cotton, the girls' father, stands proudly behind them, his military uniform adorned with various decorations and insignia. Captain Commandant Bogaerts, a distinguished Belgian military leader, had first met the Powell-Cottons in Africa a few years prior to this encounter. During the early years of World War I, he visited Quex on several occasions, seeking refuge and respite from the brutal conflict that was raging across Europe. The Quex estate, which housed a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) hospital, provided much-needed relief for wounded soldiers and offered a temporary haven for weary commanders. The serene garden setting, filled with lush greenery and vibrant flowers, serves as a stark contrast to the chaos and destruction of the war. The photograph offers a glimpse into a brief moment of peace and camaraderie amidst the turmoil of the First Great War. This poignant image, taken on August 18, 1915, is a testament to the human spirit's ability to find solace and connection even in the most challenging of times.
