This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts Mesophyllum lichenoides, a mesophyllum species commonly known as the Lichen-millepora or the Millepora-like lichen. The image is taken from George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany, published in London in 1800. The illustration was drawn and engraved by the skilled hand of Richard Polydore Nodder, who meticulously captured the intricate details of this fascinating marine organism. Mesophyllum lichenoides is a type of benthic red alga, belonging to the family Mesophyllaceae. It is characterized by its unique thallus structure, which resembles that of lichens, with a crustose, encrusting growth form. However, unlike lichens, Mesophyllum lichenoides is not a symbiotic association of fungi and algae, but rather a unicellular organism. The illustration showcases the delicate, branching structure of the thallus, with its small, round, disc-shaped structures, known as isidia, scattered along the branches.
