EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 626, featuring the Rose-Bay Sphinx or Oleander Hawk butterfly (Daphnis nerii) in its natural habitat. The butterfly is perched gracefully on the leaves of the Greater Periwinkle plant (Vinca major). The intricate details of the butterfly's wings and the delicate veins on the plant's leaves are beautifully captured in this 19th-century illustration. The Rose-Bay Sphinx is a large, striking butterfly with a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters. It is commonly found in the Mediterranean region and is known for its long proboscis, which it uses to feed on the nectar of flowers, particularly those of the Oleander plant. The Greater Periwinkle is an evergreen trailing plant that produces attractive blue-violet flowers and is often used in gardens for its ornamental value. This illustration is from the extensive collection of John Obadiah Westwood, who was a prominent English naturalist and entomologist of the 19th century. The plates were produced by the renowned scientific publishing firm, Frederick Warne & Co., under the supervision of John Curtis, F.L.S. (Fellow of the Linnaean Society). The illustrations were created by skilled artists and engravers, resulting in highly detailed and accurate representations of the insects and plants. This image provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Rose-Bay Sphinx and the Greater Periwinkle, showcasing the beauty and intricacy of both the butterfly and the plant. The illustration also serves as a reminder of the important role that natural history collections and scientific publishing played in documenting and preserving the natural world during the 1820s and 1830s.
