EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored engraving, created by Fournier after an original illustration by Oudart for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two fascinating and intricately patterned amphibians: the Fire Salamander (Salamandra salamandra) and the Hellbender Salamander (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis). The Fire Salamander, also known as the Common Fire Salamander or the Spotted Salamander, is a species of newt native to Europe. With vibrant orange and black coloring, this salamander is well-known for its striking appearance. The Fire Salamander's skin is covered in black spots and orange bars, with a red underbelly. This coloration serves as excellent camouflage, allowing the salamander to blend in with its leafy surroundings. The Hellbender Salamander, also called the Slimy Salamander or the Allegheny Alligator Salamander, is a species of salamander native to the eastern United States. Unlike the Fire Salamander, the Hellbender has a smooth, slimy skin and a flattened body shape, which helps it blend in with the rocks and boulders of its mountainous habitat. The Hellbender is a large salamander, growing up to 2 feet in length, and is an important indicator species for the health of its aquatic ecosystems. Both the Fire Salamander and Hellbender Salamander are considered near threatened species, with populations declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation, pollution, and climate change. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these unique and beautiful creatures and preserve their habitats for future generations to enjoy.
