EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "A Stag at Bay. Conjugal Felicity, a Romance. A Fall. The Wife Caught in the Act of Walking in the Rain, with her Husband holding off her Angry Advances, while a Bottle of Gin stands on the Window Sill," was designed and etched by the renowned English satirist Thomas Rowlandson in 1808 for Reverend James Beresford's publication, "The Miseries of Human Life," published by Ackermann. The image depicts a husband attempting to hold back his angry wife, who is wearing a long, wet dress and has one foot caught in a quagmire. Her feet are stuck in the mud, and she looks ready to lunge forward, her expression a mix of frustration and anger. Her husband, with a mop in hand, tries to keep her at bay, his expression one of exasperation and perhaps a hint of amusement. The scene is set in the countryside, with pigs and dogs in the background, adding to the chaotic and humorous atmosphere. A bottle of gin sits on the windowsill, suggesting that the couple's marital troubles may be fueled by alcohol. The title, "Conjugal Felicity, a Romance," is ironic, as the image portrays anything but happiness and harmony in marriage. Rowlandson's skillful use of satire and caricature is evident in this illustration, which pokes fun at the common themes of marital strife and the challenges of country life in the Regency and Georgian eras. The hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a visually striking and engaging work of art.
