EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1795, showcases an intriguing assemblage of marine life. The image features five distinct species of fish, each adding to the rich tapestry of the underwater world. At the center, the Lamprey or Petromyzon marinus (1) is depicted, a jawless fish characterized by its elongated, eel-like body and the presence of a toothed rostrum. The European Brook Lamprey, Lampetra planeri (2), is shown to its left, a smaller relative of the Lamprey, with a more slender body and a less pronounced rostrum. To the right of the Lampreys, the Dover Sole, Solea solea (3), is illustrated. This flatfish is a popular culinary delicacy, known for its white, tender flesh. The Sea Zebra, Zebrias zebra (4), is depicted at the bottom of the image. This fish, also known as the Striped Rockling, is easily recognizable by its black and white stripes. Lastly, the Moray Eel, Muraena helena (5), is portrayed in the upper left corner of the image. This eel is known for its long, serpentine body and distinctive, sharp teeth. The Moray Eel is a master of camouflage, blending in with its surroundings to ambush its prey. This engraving is a testament to the natural history knowledge of the time and the artistic skill of the engraver, providing a glimpse into the diverse marine life that continues to fascinate us today.
