EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, drawn and engraved by Richard Polydore Nodder, showcases two fascinating species of Lichen Moths, Manulea replana, also known as the Lichen-eating caterpillar or unequal lithosia, and Manulea complana, or the scarce footman and common lithosia. The lichen moths are part of the family Lithosiidae and are named for their unique association with lichen, which their larvae consume as their primary food source. The Lichen-eating caterpillar, M. replana, can be seen in the top left corner of the image, with its distinctive, elongated body covered in small, white warts and a pair of large, black antennae. The scarce footman, M. complana, is depicted in the bottom right corner, with its more rounded body and distinctive, foot-like projections on its thorax. This illustration was created for William Elford Leach's Zoological Miscellany, published by McMillan in London in 1814. Leach was a renowned English naturalist and entomologist, and his publication was a significant contribution to the scientific community of the time. The intricate details of the moths' anatomy, along with the realistic depiction of their lichen-covered surroundings, demonstrate the exceptional skill and artistry of Nodder as an engraver. This beautiful and rare illustration provides a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating insects and the scientific curiosity of the early 19th century.
