EDITORS COMMENTS
Willingham House, Market Rasen: A Grand Country Residence Lost to Time This evocative oil painting captures the grandeur of Willingham House, a country house nestled in the picturesque town of Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. Built around 1790, the house was the proud creation of Ayscoghe Boucherett, a prominent figure in local and national politics who served as Member of Parliament for Grimsby between 1796 and 1803. The architectural masterpiece was attributed to Robert Mitchell, a renowned architect of the time. The painting, estimated to date from circa 1919, showcases the elegance and sophistication of the neoclassical mansion, with its symmetrical facade, tall columns, and manicured gardens. The warm, inviting colors of the painting transport us back in time, allowing us to imagine the grand soirees and lavish banquets that once took place within its walls. Unfortunately, the story of Willingham House does not have a happy ending. In 1967, through years of neglect, the once-majestic residence was brought down by the explosives of the Royal Engineers. The painting serves as a poignant reminder of the history and beauty that was lost that day. This image is taken from the February 10, 1963, volume of Emily Beatrice Bland's 'March of the Women' collection, a treasure trove of historical photographs and illustrations. It is a testament to the importance of preserving our architectural heritage and the stories that lie within the walls of our past.
