L-W-F Model H Owl - AS64012
L-W-F Model H Owl AS64012, in later guise with extended centre nacelle and four-wheel main undercarriage. The Owl was distinctive for its tube-like twin booms with central nacelle fuselage, high-lift wings, triple fins and biplane stabilizers; the six-wheel undercarriage was later converted to four wheels. Originally planned as a transport aircraft or long-range night mail plane (hence the Owl name), the interest came from the United States Air Service, which took the sole aircraft on charge for flight testing. Date: circa 1920

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the L-W-F Model H Owl, registration number AS64012, in a later iteration with an extended center nacelle and a four-wheel main undercarriage. The Owl, designed by L-W-F (not to be confused with the company of the same name), was initially conceived as a transport aircraft or long-range night mail plane, earning its moniker from the nocturnal owl's keen eyesight and stealthy nature. The distinctive design features of this aeroplane include its tube-like twin booms, central nacelle fuselage, high-lift wings, triple fins, and biplane stabilizers. Originally, the six-wheel undercarriage was a defining characteristic of the Owl. However, it was later converted to a more conventional four-wheel configuration. The Owl's unique appearance and potential capabilities piqued the interest of the United States Air Service, leading to the acquisition of the sole aircraft for flight testing around 1920. This era marked a significant period in aviation history, with the Owl representing the cutting edge of aeronautical engineering and design. The L-W-F Model H Owl, with its intriguing blend of form and function, continues to captivate aviation enthusiasts and historians alike, offering a glimpse into the early days of flight and the boundless potential of human innovation.
