EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning frontal altar, dating back to around 1187, showcases the exquisite Romanesque art of Catalonia, specifically from the Episcopal Museum in Vic, Spain. The altar, located in the former collegiate church of Saint Vincent in Espinelves, is an anonymous masterpiece of the 12th century. The central scene depicts the Adoration of the Magi, with the three wise men, Melchior, Caspar, and Balthasar, paying homage to the infant Jesus. Each king is depicted with distinctive features, with Melchior holding a book, Caspar presenting gold, and Balthasar offering incense. The altar is adorned with intricate details, with the three kings crowned and dressed in rich robes, their faces expressive and full of reverence. The stars above Bethlehem shine brightly, and the offering of gold, frankincense, and myrrh is depicted in great detail. The altar is painted in tempera on wood, a technique common during the Middle Ages, and the gold details are added using gold leaf. The Romanesque art of Catalonia, particularly in the region of Osona, is known for its distinctive style, characterized by its emphasis on verticality, use of arches, and intricate detail. This altar from Espinelves is a prime example of this style, with its vertical composition, detailed carvings, and use of gold. The altar's preservation in the Episcopal Museum allows us to appreciate this beautiful work of art and gain insight into the artistic traditions of medieval Spain.
