Frederick Davies, 76, is King of the Darby and Joan Club in the Regents Park, London area

Frederick Davies, 76, is King of the Darby and Joan Club in the Regents Park, London area. At a Convent of A.C.I (Handmaids of the Sacred Heart) in Avenue Road, St Johns Wood, the sisters of the Order organised a " keep in touch club". Every fortnight about 40 or more old folk go and play bingo, have a chat, and have tea. There is only one Darby, and 40 Joans at this club. The odd man is Fred, admired by all the ladies from the age of 62 to 91. 12th March 1970

Frederick Davies, 76, Reigns Supreme as King of the Darby and Joan Club in London's Regents Park

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this heartwarming print captured by Charlie Ley in March 1970, we are introduced to Frederick Davies, a charismatic gentleman who holds the esteemed title of "King" at the Darby and Joan Club. Located in the picturesque area of Regents Park, London, this club was established by the sisters of A. C. I (Handmaids of the Sacred Heart) to foster connections among elderly individuals. Every fortnight, around 40 or more seniors gather at a Convent on Avenue Road for an afternoon filled with laughter and camaraderie. The activities range from lively rounds of bingo to engaging conversations over tea. While there may be only one male member affectionately referred to as "Darby" it is Frederick who steals the spotlight with his charm and admired presence amongst ladies aged between 62 and 91. This image not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to the power of community and friendship that transcends age boundaries. As we gaze upon this photograph from Memory Lane Prints, we are reminded that no matter our stage in life or our circumstances, human connection remains essential for happiness and fulfillment.
