EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print captures the chilling moment when the construction of the Berlin Wall began, forever dividing a city and symbolizing the deepening divide of the Cold War era. In the dead of night on August 13th, 1961, East German police and army units initiated their mission to close off West Berlin from its eastern counterpart. By Sunday morning, the border was sealed shut. Taken just three days after this fateful event, the image showcases a group of determined comrades from the Combat Groups of the Working Class standing guard at Brandenburg Gate. Protected by an armored scout vehicle belonging to the border police, these individuals were tasked with ensuring that no one crossed into or out of West Berlin. Adding significance to this scene are two notable figures present: Willy Brandt, then mayor of West Berlin, and American Army Generals who had come to witness firsthand this unprecedented act. Their presence underscores not only international interest but also highlights how deeply impactful this division was for both local and global communities. Preserved through Terry Fincher's lens for Memory Lane Prints, this photograph serves as a stark reminder of a tumultuous time in history when physical barriers were erected between families and friends overnight—a testament to human resilience amidst political strife.
