Archaeologist cleaning a golden Celtic necklace

Cleaning Celtic necklace. Archaeologist cleaning a finely crafted Celtic necklace using a brush, a suction device and a microscope. The gold necklace was excavated from a grave at Glauberg near Frankfurt in Germany. The grave also held a statue of the druid nobleman who lay in it, along with gold and bronze offerings. These items have shown that the Celts were better goldsmiths than their Roman contemporaries. The buried man has been named the Glauberg Giant due to his great height. The Celts dominated western and central Europe during the first millennium B.C. Photographed in the Glauberg excavation laboratories at the State Department of Archaeology in Wiesbaden, Germany. EDITORS COMMENTS

In this photo print, we witness an archaeologist delicately cleaning a mesmerizing golden Celtic necklace. With great precision and care, the expert uses a brush, suction device, and microscope to restore the necklace's former glory. This exquisite piece of craftsmanship was unearthed from a grave at Glauberg near Frankfurt in Germany. The significance of this discovery goes beyond its aesthetic appeal. Alongside the necklace, the burial site also revealed a statue of a druid nobleman and various gold and bronze offerings. These remarkable artifacts shed light on the superior goldsmithing skills possessed by the Celts compared to their Roman counterparts during their dominance over western and central Europe in ancient times. Dubbed as the "Glauberg Giant" due to his towering height, this buried man represents an intriguing glimpse into Celtic culture and history. The photograph captures not only the meticulous work carried out by archaeologists but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity throughout time. Taken within the excavation laboratories at Germany's State Department of Archaeology in Wiesbaden, this image is just one example of Science Photo Library's vast collection that showcases our fascination with ancient civilizations and their extraordinary creations.
