Photographic Print : Coloured SEM of pure salt crystals
Photo Prints from Science Photo Library
Coloured SEM of pure salt crystals
Salt. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pure salt (BDH Analar sodium chloride) re- crystallised from distilled water. These salt crystals are built up from a cubic lattice of sodium and chloride ions. In the absence of impurities an exact cubic crystal form would be produced. This image shows that in practice this basic cube is usually disrupted by dislocations; these give rise to crystals with a variety of shapes, although they all retain the basic cubic symmetry. Magnification: x80 at 6x6cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of pure salt crystals, captured through a coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM). These mesmerizing crystals have been re-crystallized from distilled water, resulting in their flawless purity. The composition of these salt crystals is formed by a cubic lattice structure composed of sodium and chloride ions. In an ideal scenario without any impurities, these salt crystals would exhibit a perfect cubic shape. However, this image reveals that in reality, the formation of dislocations disrupts the basic cube structure. As a result, these fascinating crystals take on various shapes while still maintaining their fundamental cubic symmetry. With a magnification level of x80 at 6x6cm size, this photograph allows us to delve into the microscopic world and appreciate the intricacies hidden within everyday substances like salt. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly mundane objects possess remarkable complexity when observed at such close proximity. This visually stunning image not only appeals to scientists and researchers but also captivates those with an appreciation for art and aesthetics. Whether used for educational purposes or simply admired for its sheer beauty, this print from Science Photo Library offers us a glimpse into the extraordinary wonders found within our ordinary surroundings.
