Computer artwork of the hormone insulin

Insulin. Computer artwork of a molecule of the hormone insulin, essential in maintaining the balance of glucose metabolism in the body. Insulin is a small protein made up of two chains of amino acids (blue spheres) linked to each other by bridges of two sulphur atoms (disulphide bridges, orange). It is secreted by the pancreas gland of all vertebrates, including humans, although the exact sequence of amino acids differs from species to species. Insulin is secreted in response to high blood glucose levels (such as after a meal). It promotes the uptake of blood glucose by body cells. Lack of insulin leads to the disease diabetes mellitus. EDITORS COMMENTS

This computer artwork showcases the intricate molecular structure of insulin, a vital hormone responsible for regulating glucose metabolism in our bodies. The image highlights the complexity and elegance of this small protein, composed of two chains of amino acids represented by mesmerizing blue spheres. These chains are interconnected by disulphide bridges, depicted as vibrant orange links formed by two sulphur atoms. Insulin is an essential secretion produced by the pancreas gland in all vertebrates, including humans. Although its amino acid sequence varies across species, its fundamental role remains unchanged - maintaining glucose balance within our system. When blood glucose levels rise after a meal, insulin is released to facilitate the absorption of glucose into body cells. The absence or insufficient production of insulin can lead to diabetes mellitus - a debilitating disease that affects millions worldwide. This visually stunning print serves as a reminder of the crucial role played by this remarkable hormone in sustaining our overall well-being. Crafted with meticulous detail and precision using advanced computer graphics techniques, this image not only celebrates scientific exploration but also captivates viewers with its artistic allure. It exemplifies how science and art intertwine seamlessly to convey complex concepts in an aesthetically pleasing manner. This extraordinary visual representation was created by Science Photo Library – a trusted source for high-quality scientific imagery that fuels curiosity and inspires further discoveries in various fields such as chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology.
