Photographic Print : Diamond and graphite, Tunguska
Photo Prints from Science Photo Library
Diamond and graphite, Tunguska
Diamond and graphite accretions from the Tunguska site, light microscope image. In 1908 a large astronomical body exploded above Tunguska, Siberia, Russia. The energy released was equivalent to around 1000 times that of the Hiroshima atomic-bomb. Although there are many theories as to the type of body involved, one of the more credible, propounded by British astronomer Francis Whipple, is that it was a comet which exploded around 7.5 kilometres above the surface of the Earth. This mineral sample was taken from the site and was studied to help scientists understand the nature of the explosion

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intriguing juxtaposition of diamond and graphite, two forms of carbon with vastly different properties. The image captures accretions from the Tunguska site in Siberia, Russia, where a momentous astronomical event occurred in 1908. The sheer magnitude of this explosion was equivalent to an astonishing 1000 times the destructive force unleashed by the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Scientists have long debated the nature of this cataclysmic event, but one theory put forth by esteemed British astronomer Francis Whipple suggests that it was a comet that detonated approximately 7.5 kilometers above Earth's surface. This mineral sample extracted from the impact site has been meticulously studied to unravel the mysteries surrounding this extraordinary explosion. The monochrome composition adds an air of intrigue and mystique to this geological marvel. As we gaze upon these precious gemstones under a light microscope, we are reminded of their immense significance in understanding not only our planet's history but also celestial phenomena. Through meticulous mineralogy research conducted on these diamonds and graphite formations, scientists hope to gain deeper insights into the true nature and implications of such cosmic events. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to human curiosity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge about our world and beyond.
