Pinned vertebrae, X-ray

Pinned vertebrae. Coloured X-ray of pins (beige) joining two of the vertebrae (pink) of a 29 year old woman together to immobilise them. Vertebrae are the box-like bones that make up the spine. They protect the spinal cord and support the body. Normally, vertebrae are separated by intervertebral discs, flexible pads that impart a degree of flexibility to the spine and help it to absorb shocks. However, the disc between the two pinned vertebrae was damaged, and the two were joined together to prevent further damage occurring. The two pinned vertebrae are L3 and L4, in the lower (lumbar) back. The pelvis is seen at bottom, with some ribs at upper left and right

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a remarkable medical intervention. The image captures the intricate details of pinned vertebrae in a 29-year-old woman's spine, as seen through a colored X-ray. Two beige pins can be observed joining together two specific vertebrae, L3 and L4, located in the lower back region. Vertebrae are essential box-like bones that constitute the backbone, safeguarding the spinal cord and providing support to our bodies. Typically separated by intervertebral discs, these flexible pads grant flexibility to our spines while absorbing shocks. However, due to damage sustained by the disc between these two particular vertebrae, they were immobilized using pins to prevent further harm. The radiograph not only highlights this unique treatment but also offers glimpses of surrounding anatomical structures such as ribs at the upper left and right corners and the pelvis at the bottom of the image. This visual representation sheds light on musculoskeletal disorders like slipped discs or arthritis that can affect individuals across various age groups. Through this photograph's lens, we gain insight into modern medicine's ability to address complex conditions affecting our spinal health. It serves as a testament to advancements in healthcare and reminds us of both the fragility and resilience inherent within our bodies.
