Portrait of Niels Bohr

Potrait of Niels Bohr (1885-1962), Danish physicist and discoverer of electron orbitals. Bohr was educated at the University of Copenhagen, receiving his doctorate in 1911. Whilst at Cambridge in 1912-16, he proposed the idea of electron shells and energy levels. He explained the absorption and emission of radiation by atoms as a change in electron energy, further demonstrating that electrons occupied discrete energy levels. For this work he was awarded the 1922 Nobel Prize for Physics. He worked on the US atom bomb project during World War Two, and in common with many physicists spent later years campaigning for the peaceful use of the atom

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic portrait of Niels Bohr, a renowned Danish physicist and the brilliant mind behind the discovery of electron orbitals. Born in 1885, Bohr's intellectual journey led him to the University of Copenhagen where he obtained his doctorate in 1911. During his time at Cambridge from 1912 to 1916, Bohr revolutionized our understanding of atomic structure by proposing the concept of electron shells and energy levels. His groundbreaking explanation for the absorption and emission of radiation by atoms involved changes in electron energy, revealing that electrons occupied distinct energy levels. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to physics, Niels Bohr was honored with the prestigious Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922. This esteemed accolade solidified his position as a true pioneer in scientific exploration. Not only did Bohr leave an indelible mark on theoretical physics, but he also played a significant role during World War Two as part of the US atom bomb project. However, it is worth noting that like many other physicists, he dedicated his later years to advocating for peaceful applications of atomic knowledge. This remarkable portrait captures not only Niels Bohr's brilliance but also serves as a testament to his enduring legacy within the scientific community. As we gaze upon this image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded once again of how one individual's pursuit can shape our understanding and pave new paths for future generations.
