1490 Leonardo Da Vinci colour portrait

Leonardo da Vinci, Italian artist and inventor (15 April 1452 - 2 May 1519). Engraved portrait by J. Posselwhite in The Gallery of Portraits 1835 with later colouring, ascribed from the engraving by Raffaelle Morghen, (itself after the undated self portrait by Leonardo da Vinci). Da Vinci was one of the most diversely talented people to have ever lived. His contributions to science include principally; anatomy, engineering and invention. Fritjof Capra (2007) argues that Leonardos scientific approach was more integrated and holistic than Gallileos or Newtons - making him a more direct antecedant of modern systems and complexity theory than those scientists. Darwin reportedly kept a version of this print as a muse on his study wall at Christs College Cambridge

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable 1490 colour portrait of the legendary Leonardo da Vinci, an Italian artist and inventor whose brilliance continues to inspire generations. Engraved by J. Posselwhite in The Gallery of Portraits in 1835, this masterpiece has been adorned with later colouring, ascribed from the engraving by Raffaelle Morghen which was itself based on an undated self-portrait by da Vinci. Leonardo da Vinci's genius spanned across various fields, making him one of the most diversely talented individuals to have ever graced our world. His scientific contributions were particularly groundbreaking, encompassing anatomy, engineering, and invention. Fritjof Capra argues that Leonardo's scientific approach was more integrated and holistic than those of Galileo or Newton – positioning him as a direct precursor to modern systems and complexity theory. It is fascinating to note that Charles Darwin himself held this very print dear as he pursued his studies at Christs College Cambridge. This visual representation served as a muse for Darwin during his exploration into evolutionary biology. As we gaze upon this exquisite illustration from the 16th century, we are reminded not only of Leonardo da Vinci's immense talent but also his influence on subsequent generations of scientists, engineers, and artists alike. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by this extraordinary Renaissance figure who forever changed our understanding of mechanics, anatomy, and the complexities inherent in nature itself.
