Spiral galaxy NGC 2403, optical image C017 / 3738

Spiral galaxy NGC 2403, combined optical image. NGC 2403 lies about 12 million light years from Earth, in the constellation Camelopardalis. The galaxy consists of a central nucleus surrounded by spiral arms. It also hosts a supernova that was discovered in 2004 (orange star directly left of the galaxys nucleus). A supernova is the explosive death of a massive star and this one is the closest to Earth that had been recorded in over a decade. As the light emission pattern from supernovae is well understood, study of distant supernovae can be used to gauge distances and aid cosmological understanding. Image compiled from data from the Subaru Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Spiral galaxy NGC 2403, a celestial wonder located approximately 12 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Camelopardalis. The image, compiled from data captured by the Subaru Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope, unveils a breathtaking sight of this spiral galaxy's central nucleus enveloped by its magnificent spiral arms. A remarkable feature within NGC 2403 is an orange star situated directly to the left of its nucleus. This star marks the location of a supernova that was discovered in 2004. Supernovae represent the explosive demise of massive stars, and this particular event holds great significance as it stands as one of the closest recorded supernovae to Earth in over a decade. The study and analysis of distant supernovae provide valuable insights into our understanding of cosmology. By examining their light emission patterns, scientists can accurately gauge distances between galaxies and further unravel mysteries about our vast universe. As we gaze upon this ethereal composition, we are reminded not only of the immense scale and complexity inherent in space but also how interconnected our knowledge is with these celestial phenomena. Through collaborations between observatories like Subaru and Hubble, humanity continues to deepen its grasp on astrophysics while marveling at the stellar wonders that grace our night sky.
