Spirograph planetary nebula IC418

Planetary nebula. False colour optical image of the Spirograph nebula, IC 418. This is a planetary nebula, formed by the gas thrown off from a dying red giant star. The colours show different gases; ionised nitrogen is red, hydrogen is green and ionised oxygen is blue. The term planetary is misleading, it refers to the similarity of such nebulae to planets in early telescopes. IC 418 lies about 2000 light years from Earth in the constellation Lepus. This image was made using the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Spirograph planetary nebula IC418, a stunning display of colors and symmetry in the vast expanse of space. Formed by the expelled gas from a dying red giant star, this planetary nebula is a true celestial marvel. The false color optical image highlights different gases present within the nebula. The vibrant red hues represent ionized nitrogen, while green signifies hydrogen, and blue represents ionized oxygen. It's fascinating to witness how these distinct gases intertwine and create such an awe-inspiring spectacle. Although named "planetary" this term can be misleading as it refers to the resemblance these nebulae bear to planets when observed through early telescopes. Located approximately 2000 light years away in the constellation Lepus, IC 418 remains distant yet accessible through this breathtaking photograph. Captured using the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), this image exemplifies humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our universe. From its explosive origins to its glowing aftermath, every detail within this cosmic bubble tells a story of stellar evolution and eventual demise. This remarkable piece of astrophysical artistry serves as a reminder that even in death, stars leave behind extraordinary legacies that continue to inspire us all. With each glance at this print from Science Photo Library, we are transported into realms beyond our reach - unveiling mysteries that fuel our curiosity about what lies beyond our own planet Earth
