View of the healthy tongue of a woman
MODEL RELEASED. Tongue. View of the healthy tongue of a woman. The tongue tastes food and drink, and is also necessary for chewing, swallowing and speech. It is covered with numerous tiny projections called papillae, which differ in shape, size and colour. Filiform papillae are at the front of the tongue. Fungiform papillae are larger and have a good blood supply, which makes them appear red. Larger still are the circumvallate papillae, which are surrounded by a deep cleft or trench. There are 8-10 circumvallate papillae at the back of the human tongue, the area where most of our taste buds are located

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a woman's healthy tongue. The tongue, an essential organ for various functions, is depicted in all its glory. From tasting food and drink to aiding in chewing, swallowing, and speech, this remarkable muscle plays a vital role in our daily lives. Covered with countless tiny projections known as papillae, the surface of the tongue presents a fascinating array of shapes, sizes, and colors. At the front lie filiform papillae while larger fungiform papillae boast a rich blood supply that gives them their vibrant red appearance. However, it is at the back where we find the most significant structures - 8-10 circumvallate papillae residing within deep clefts or trenches. These circumvallate papillae are home to numerous taste buds responsible for detecting flavors and enhancing our gustatory experiences. As we savor different tastes on our tongues' landscape, these specialized receptors come alive. Captured by Science Photo Library with utmost precision and clarity, this image not only highlights the beauty of human anatomy but also serves as a reminder of how intricately designed our bodies are. It encourages us to appreciate every aspect of ourselves – even those often overlooked – that contribute to our overall well-being and sensory perception.
