EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of Richard I, Coeur de Lion, landing at Jaffa (Joppa) in September 1191. Richard, the son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, was the second Angevin (Plantagenet) king of England from 1189 to 1199. During the Third Crusade, which took place from 1189 to 1192, Richard led the Christian crusaders against Saladin, a great Muslim leader. Legend has it that as Richard jumped into the water upon arrival at Jaffa, he cried out with fervor: "Cursed for ever be he who follows me not!". This courageous act symbolized his unwavering commitment to his cause. Remarkably, Richard successfully held Jaffa until July 1192 when it fell to Saladin's forces. However, just a few days later on July 31st, he recaptured this strategic city. The Treaty of Jaffa signed between Richard and Saladin in September brought about a three-year truce between their warring factions. This treaty marked an important milestone in religious conflicts during that era. This wood engraving from c1880 beautifully depicts this significant event in history. It serves as a reminder of Richard's leadership and determination during one of the most tumultuous periods in English history - a time when religion played a central role in shaping political alliances and warfare strategies.
