EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the historic Crow Butte near Ft. Robinson, Nebraska, showcasing a significant moment in Native American history. In an intense battle between the Indians and the Crows, the Indians strategically drove their enemies up onto this mountain and camped on its only approach. Their intention was to either kill or starve their enemy into submission. However, faced with limited options for escape, the resourceful Crows killed and skinned one of their ponies. Ingeniously utilizing every available material, they transformed the pony's hide into ropes which were then used to lower their ponies and people from the opposite side of the mountain. This remarkable feat demonstrates both their determination and adaptability in overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The photographer responsible for capturing this extraordinary moment is John C. H. Grabill, an esteemed American photographer who opened his first photographic studio in 1886. His skillful composition transports us back to a pivotal event in America's past when battles for land and survival shaped our nation's history. With its retro-styled aesthetic and rich historical significance, this print serves as a captivating reminder of our country's complex heritage. It offers viewers a glimpse into an era where courage clashed with adversity amidst breathtaking landscapes like Crow Butte—a testament to human resilience that continues to resonate today within these United States of America.
