Envy, plate 5 from the series 'The Vices' by Jacob Matham (c1587), is a powerful allegorical engraving from the Dutch artistic school of the late 16th century. The man's face is contorted in anger and jealousy, his eyes fixed on a dog, a symbol of contentment and happiness, held by a second figure. Envy is shown as a reptilian creature, a snake or serpent, emphasizing the sinister and insidious nature of this emotion.
