EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait captures Princess Dagmar of Denmark, later known as Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia, in the late 1860s or early 1870s. Dagmar, born in 1847, was the eldest daughter of Christian IX of Denmark and was destined for a life of royalty. In 1866, she married Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich of Russia, the eldest son of Emperor Alexander II. The portrait shows Princess Dagmar facing right, dressed in an elegant Victorian gown, with her hair styled in a high bun adorned with a delicate necklace. Her expression is serene and confident, reflecting her regal heritage. The photograph is reminiscent of the Meeting of Frontiers, a diplomatic and cultural exchange between Denmark and Russia, which took place in 1863. The portrait is believed to have been taken during the period of the Congressional Library, a significant time for the production of cartes de visite, small photographic portraits that were popular during the 19th century. The image is a testament to the artistic and cultural exchange between Denmark and Russia during this time, as well as the enduring legacy of the Romanov dynasty. Empress Maria Feodorovna went on to become the Empress Consort of Russia, and later the mother of Emperor Nicholas II. Her life was marked by tragedy, as she lost her husband in 1881 and her son in 1918. This portrait, however, captures a moment of beauty and elegance in her youth, a reminder of her royal heritage and the rich history of the House of Romanov.
