R. M. S. Mauretania. (Cunard Line), c1930s. Creator: Unknown

R.M.S. Mauretania. (Cunard Line), c1930s. The Mauretania was built for the Cunard Line by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Wallsend on the Tyne in England. Launched in 1906, she operated on the transatlantic route to New York, holding the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing from 1909 until 1929. She served as a troopship during World War I, her speed enabling her to avoid falling prey to German u-boats. Mauretania was retired in 1934 after Cunard merged with the White Star Line and the 81, 000 ton Queen Mary entered service. The Mauretania was scrapped the following year. Postcard

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic R. M. S. Mauretania, a magnificent ocean liner that graced the seas during the 1930s. Built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Wallsend on the Tyne in England, this vessel was a proud creation of Cunard Line. Launched in 1906, she swiftly became renowned for her transatlantic voyages to New York and held the prestigious Blue Riband title for fastest crossing from 1909 to 1929. During World War I, her remarkable speed allowed her to serve as a troopship while skillfully evading German u-boats. However, with Cunard's merger with White Star Line and the introduction of Queen Mary in 1934 – an impressive ship weighing 81,000 tons – Mauretania gracefully retired from service. The image depicts two individuals shaking hands against the backdrop of this grand vessel's towering funnels. The vibrant colors bring life to this snapshot from history and capture both its significance and beauty. This postcard serves as a testament to an era when steamships dominated transportation across vast oceans. Though no longer sailing today, R. M. S. Mauretania remains etched in maritime history as an emblematic symbol of elegance and speed on the high seas. This print is a cherished reminder of her legacy and contribution to both passenger travel and wartime efforts alike.
