Tyrone Gap, View from the Bridge, 1874. Creator: Adolf Closs

Tyrone Gap, View from the Bridge, 1874. The Juniata River, Pennsylvania, USA. The hills that lie at the base of the mountains show pleasant farm-houses and deep-green-leaved corn. The mountains...look as if they had been cleft asunder, for there is a great gap cut between two mountains. This in times past was doubtless the work of the Juniata [River], and was not so difficult as it looks; for the shaly mountains are very different from the firm limestone, through which the Kanata cuts its way at Trenton Falls. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

Tyrone Gap, View from the Bridge, 1874 - A Glimpse into Pennsylvania's Picturesque Landscape

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print by Adolf Closs takes us back to the enchanting scenery of Tyrone Gap in 1874. The Juniata River meanders through this idyllic region of Pennsylvania, painting a serene picture with its gentle flow. As we gaze upon the image, our eyes are drawn to the hills at the base of majestic mountains that proudly stand tall in the background. The artist skillfully captures a slice of rural life as farmhouses dotting the landscape peek out from behind lush cornfields adorned with deep green leaves. It is a testament to nature's bounty and man's harmonious coexistence with it. A striking feature emerges between two mountains - an awe-inspiring gap that appears as if these colossal peaks were cleaved apart. This natural wonder was carved over time by none other than the mighty Juniata River itself, effortlessly navigating through shaly mountains unlike its limestone counterpart at Trenton Falls. Adolf Closs masterfully portrays this breathtaking vista using wood engraving techniques, transporting us back to an era when America's vast landscapes were celebrated for their beauty and grandeur. This print is part of "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and showcases renowned American artists' illustrations on steel and wood. As we admire this historical artwork today, let us appreciate both nature's handiwork and human ingenuity in capturing such remarkable scenes for generations to come.
